PHOENIX UNBROKEN - Charity Partner Competition
Saturday Sept. 14th (8am- 4pm)
Here is Coach Megan to let us know what it's all about...
Phoenix Unbroken is a charity competition that supports The Phoenix organization. The Phoenix is a free sober active community that supports those who are recovering from substance abuse and seeking to live a sober life. By giving those a gym to call home, a family that supports them and loves them, The Phoenix is redefining the way somebody who suffers from substance abuse disorders recovers.
Dionne and I are participating because we've witnessed the pain substance abuse can inflict on family members, friends, and communities. We are both proponents of healthy, drug-free lifestyles and we believe in The Phoenix's overall mission.
You guys can support Megan and Dionne through their fundraising page here.
The Crossfit Games Open: October 10th - November 11th
The CrossFit Games Open is the largest fitness competition on Earth and an exciting showcase of the CrossFit community. Here, athletes like you, from all around the world, show up and push themselves further than they ever thought possible over a five-week period. Challenges, PRs, and the unknown await.
During the 5 weeks, Crossfit Tustin will be participating in the Open, so if you want to get the most out of it, sing up here.
Meet our latest addition to the Crossfit Tustin Coaching Staff: Coach Matt Stauffer
We made him answer a few questions to get to know him better.
You recently moved. Where did you come from and what was it like there?
I just moved to Costa Mesa from Owensboro, KY (Southwest of Louisville, KY). It's a relatively small rural town with a very active community, mainly cycling and running! Home of the best donut shop on the Eastern side of the country. Yes, it's better than Voodoo and Sidecar. (The Rolling Pin).
Do you have any siblings?
There are 3 other siblings in the Stauffer clan: Rainesford (27), Luke (25), and Annie (18)
What is the most important thing you learned from your parents/grandparents?
The value of work ethic and lending a hand to those who need it. "Get your work done early and if you're able to help someone and better their lives you're obligated to do so" - Ty Stauffer
What is your fitness/athletic background?
I grew up in a very active family and playing most sports, but mainly soccer and futsal. I found CrossFit after an injury (groin tear - ouch) and in typical CrossFit fashion, I was hooked ever since.
Have you ever had any other jobs outside of the fitness Industry?
I'm currently awaiting for my country music career to take off so it's only a matter of time... hahaha not really. For me it always has, and will be the Fitness Industry!
Give us a list of all the hobbies you love to do?
Besides CrossFit I enjoy riding mountain bikes and motorcycles, snowboarding, flying helicopters and surfing, extremely inadequately if I may add. I'm into anything that's going to get the adrenaline going #FullSendAlways
What is one thing, that you have not done yet, that you'll want to have done/experienced before you turn 70?
One thing I've always said I would do before I die or before I'm not able to is race in the Baja 1000 on a motorcycle. I believe it would be a true test of both my fitness and mental fortitude, plus it would be epic.
Favorite... Food: I only eat lean meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar....... Just kidding, Chicken & Waffles or Tollhouse Cookie dough
Music: Stone - Whiskey Myers, or High - Young Thug ft. Elton John
Workout: Muscle Up Biathlon or Triangle Couplet
Open Gym Changes
As Crossfit Tustin grows and we continually try to improve our service, we are doubling down on our 2 biggest assets: our community and our coaching. In order to support these, we are going to be making some changes to Open Gym access. “Open Gym” is the use of equipment and space without coaching.
To that end we ask that any supplemental work done Open Gym style, be done after your participation in class or in conjunction with our CFT Compete program. This will ensure athletes do not interfere with the instruction and flow of the class experience (noise, space, and equipment considerations). Participation in class is the main way we coach/care for our members and steward the communal life.
Unlimited Members will also have access to Open gym between class times starting at 10am and must be finished by 3:30 pm Monday - Friday and 9 - 11 am Sunday.
To those of you concerned with this change, please reach out, we'd love to chat.
Please email either firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
For those of you that are looking for more volume than the Class programming, check out our new program launching tomorrow, CFT Compete.
CFT Compete is for athletes looking for more performance and a competitive edge in functional fitness. CFT Compete will provide more volume and specificity that comprehensively integrates with the class Performance Track. Compete will have 3 daily components. The first of which will be the class WOD. The other two will include either strength/olympic lifting, conditioning, or a gymnastic/skill component, depending on the demands of the class workout. It will also include detailed instructions for scaling options, cool downs, and how to get the most out of your daily/weekly training rhythms.
It will be available for all CFT members as part of a free trial period between now and the Open.
Look for its launch on Wodify tomorrow and have fun!
email Coach Adam with any questions regarding CFT Compete.
Pursue Elegance (especially in training)
"Elegance is what happens when the clutter is removed and the essential ideas remain, and it is part and parcel of virtuosity. It is performing the common uncommonly well..."
Are you frustrated with the amount of time it takes to get a good strict pull up?
Here are a couple of super dudes breaking down the fundamental building blocks of developing a really good pull up. If you here some terminology that you don't understand, log it and ask your coach at the gym to explain it to you, we loooooooove those conversations! (seriously we do, that's not sarcastic)
